Meet vibrant artist, Brenda Robinson!

I had the most energy-filled, vibrant, and nurturing of interviews with artist and soul-connected friend, Brenda Robinson.

Brenda Robinson.jpg

You see, I’d met Brenda a few months ago when we took a class with Michelle Giambra at Suncoast Jin Shin Jyutsu in Sarasota. And from our initial meeting I had felt a connectedness with her, but I didn’t know why. Before we left that day, she had shown Michelle and I a recent copy of one of her paintings and it literally sent a rush of energy through my body, yes, just holding that piece of paper! I’d never felt, what I term as “God bumps“, just from holding a piece of paper before, so immediately I knew there was something special here–and that I wanted to speak with Brenda more about her art.

When I learned that Brenda was showing her art at a new gallery in Lakewood Ranch, I knew it would be a great time to go see her, and hopefully interview her about her beautiful and colorful artwork.

Our Divine Beings DNA flows through all of us.jpg

I only had to ask Brenda one question and our conversation flowed with so much ease and connectedness that she nearly answered all of my questions without my needing to ask many more.

So, what was that first question?

Well, I asked Brenda what inspires her when she gets up in the morning to create her art, does a muse strike, or does an idea come when she sits down with a blank canvas?

In Brenda’s humble and gracious answer, she said:

To sit down with a blank canvas is the scariest thing, and I fought that for a long, long time.

I used to do workshops creating altered books by taking old, unloved, throw-away books and turning them into beautiful works of art. The ultimate in recycling.

One of the first books I found at Goodwill was called, “Jumping for Joy” and after altering it and turning it into a beautiful art-filled memory, I painted the cover blue.

Some books have old, thin pages, or new books with flimsy pages or unstable spines. So, you take these kinds of otherwise unusable books, and glue pages together, or staple or sew on them, and draw or paint on them. You’ll blank out some of the words you don’t need or want, paint on the page, write on the painted page and create a journal, put your own photos inside, rendering a new kind of artwork.

I got a bit caught up in the moment when we talked about drawing though, because I’ve never considered myself as able to draw (as I’m married to a man who can draw, hence, I understand the ability and talent involved in that). So, when I told Brenda that I can’t draw she was quick to say, “Yes, you can”, “Oh, yes, you can draw.” And proceeded to give me all kinds of tips to inspire me to start–even after we concluded our interview.

Brenda really has a way of making you feel that you can do what she does! She told me a face I might draw will be my face, different from the way someone else would draw a face. Just like, God made a leaf, then any leaf I would draw would be my leaf, my interpretation of that leaf. Ahh! What an eye-opening moment for me!

Continuing on, Brenda explained,

I painted a dog for Southeastern Guide Dogs “Heroes on Parade” last year, and by the way, “Doc” came in third place out of over 50 painted dogs. He is now living in the lobby of Doctor’s Hospital, bringing joy to all who come into the front lobby. During that project, I had all this paint so I started slapping the paint on canvases and started making my imaginary flower garden. In this case, the Superhero dogs were my muse. Now, I’m not a landscape or flower type artist, and a purist probably wouldn’t like my flowers because my rose wouldn’t look like their rose.

What style or type of art do you like?

I love Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin (the French post-Impressionist artist). If you look at his work, and the colors he uses, he was inspired by the gorgeous colors of Tahiti, it’s people and environment. I like Monet and all the texture of the impressionists. There was movement in their art. I didn’t know that’s why I liked it. But, it spoke to me.

Some of my all time favorite artists are: collagist, Romare Bearden, story teller and installation artist, Whitfield Lovell, and the multicolored art of Louis Delsarte.

I continue to be inspired by other contemporary artists that are too numerous to mention.

My art breathes and tells a story, there’s always a story. There is life in that memory of remembering.

Going back to the altered books.

One of the first things I used was the old time handkerchiefs that we used to iron because they brought me joy, and this book was filled with all of the symbols of what was joyful to me.

I used one with decorative edges. Fun! Also, I love butterflies, so I cut the shape of a butterfly within many of the pasted pages using an X-Acto knife and cut it so the wings would flutter. There were pages that were glued together. Some pages contained Bible verses, and song titles, such as my mother’s favorite song, “In the Garden.” [Author’s note: That was also my mother’s favorite song! Ah, synchronicity!]

There were pages with rocks on them and the words, “If you don’t praise Him the rocks will cry out to Him” and put angels on it too. One of the pages had blood on it, so I added the words, “The debt was paid in full” with a receipt from one of those receipt booklets added to the page.

Another cool thing about creating these altered books was that we’d have a group of seven people and we’d send our book to another and that person would take their turn to add to your book, and so on to another person. When you’d get your book back you’d have seven different people’s art in your book. I still have almost all of those altered books!

Now, some people don’t have patience, or want to be too exact. But not me, I’m free flowing and easy about it. If I thought I did something wrong or didn’t like what I’d created, I would just paint over it!

We looked at several of Brenda’s paintings and discussed what we see in each of them. Everyone sees different things in art, which is why I love it so much, and this is something (among many things) that Brenda and I share in common.

Brenda’s work is always spiritual. In her own words,

Painting is praying with my heart and hands. Using them to help the viewer see the common threads between us all.

God is the ultimate creator, we are made in His image. And He’s given us the glorious task of representing him on earth.

I paint how it feels to me to listen to a beautiful song, what joy feels like, hope, sadness, or grief. Painting is my response to the messy middle of our color-filled world. Color is my way of communicating. I feel most alive when I am being creative and painting! I try to capture the energy of our common humanity, where we can connect our spirits through art and show that we are more alike than different. When I complete a piece of art, I am in awe of what my Creator has allowed me to share.

Most colorful angel.jpg

This morning, Brenda woke up with Marvin Gaye’s song on her mind, “What’s going on.” And that inspired her this morning. Whatever is going on in the community or the world right now, that’s what inspires her to paint. She writes prayers and verses on the canvas first, before she starts, and she’ll paint over them. It is important for her to have her DNA all over the canvas. And for me, as a writer and energy medicine person, the vibration of the words, they’re still there and they call me in.

I invite you to visit Brenda’s art display and spend some time to visit with her work and look for the aliveness she presents.

Please visit Brenda’s blog at: http://rubysdaughterbrenda.blogspot.com

Brenda’s website is: http://www.brendakrobinson.com

Brenda is currently displaying several pieces of her art at:

J & J Gallery

8131 Lakewood Main Street

Suite M-106 (It’s on the corner)

Lakewood Ranch, FL

941-444-6056

I must tell you that upon stepping into J & J Gallery, I was warmly greeted (by Judy, the owners mother), and I sensed a lightness. The gallery is very expansive and energetically inviting.

Before I left, I had the opportunity to talk with Judy about the opening of the gallery and several of the artists displaying works there. It is a family gallery, so you will not see nudes there. The gallery also looks for artworks that are of an uplifting and positive nature. Thus, my visit to J & J Gallery left me with a huge amount of heartfelt appreciation for the owners and the artists. I highly recommend you stop in for a visit.

I don’t know. And it’s okay!

I don’t know.

And I don’t know is a valid answer to any question when you really do not know. Not that you’re fluffing off the question, or not because you’re too busy, or your brain is too full to pay attention to the question, but because you actually have not weighed all of the available information or sourced for more, to arrive at an answer.

My husband has often commented that my dad will end a conversation with the words, “I don’t know.” And I’ve told my husband that over the years, my mom drove me nuts because during almost every conversation at some point she’d mention, “Do you know? I don’t know.” But now, mom’s gone. And of course, I’m finding there’s much that I don’t know!

But now, I think it’s okay not to know!

You see, just because I don’t know everything, doesn’t mean that I don’t live IN joy! I choose JOY in every moment. I see synchronicities in many things and relish in the glorious luscious moments, while minimizing the painful ones. Seeking balance, there is no void in me.

Therefore, I am fine not knowing exactly what comes next. I have many ideas about what comes next, but no one knows for sure, even those who’ve died and been resuscitated! And near death, well, as many of those stories as I’ve heard, though similar, they’re not all the same. Oh, I believe those persons, and the stories they recount–mostly because the stories remain unchanged for each one, though I’ve heard their stories multiple times (and I think it would be impossible to tell a lie the same way time after time).

But mostly, I’m writing this because I don’t know if you are supposed to help me change or if I’m supposed to help you. I do know we are all in this together, and that we are ALL God’s children.

Some of the most well-meaning people lately (even family) have tried to introduce, or re-introduce me to Jesus Christ, to “save me.” And I’m fine with their loving attempts, because, well, they love me! I understand their intention. I really do! And I love them for wanting to “see me again in heaven”, or wherever wonderful saved people go after death.

I prefer to believe at this moment in my life, that we all go into a Beyond. And it’s completely inexplicably beautiful! Beyond anything we can IMAGINE!

But, if your thoughts of salvation are based on your worry about whether you’ll see me at some later time in heaven, think about the JOY we might be missing RIGHT NOW, while we’re talking and connecting on a very real, visceral level. Let’s not focus so much on seeing each other again in a hereafter that no one’s seen, and miss out on the amazing and REAL life we’re currently experiencing!

I also invite you to ponder if your worry is not based upon your own ego, fear of death or the unknown.

As you can see, I’ve given this topic just a bit of thought.

A guru once told me, “If you’re unsure of anything, or troubled by any particular thought, just sit with it for awhile.” So, on this particular topic I have sat with it for some time. And here’s what I’ve been given:

If you feel I am not saved, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is your every thought a prayer?
  • Is your every moment alone spent in meditation listening for God’s word?
  • Is your every bath, shower, or swim–a baptism?
  • Is your every bite or drink of food taken in remembrance of your Creator?

Until you can do these things and your life bears the fruit of your pure intentions, please do not judge me or any other human BEings in your life.

If you are worried about anything, you are not living in Faith. And for sure I don’t think you’re living your faith, because Jesus said we’d all be known by our fruits (what we produce with our lives).

Moment to moment people change. Even the ones who you might feel have hurt you or someone you love dearly. Send them loving thoughts without trying to change them.

That is all.

And I promise to do the same.

But, I don’t know. Do you?

Many teachers can show you, yet your vitality and vibrant life depends on what you practice daily

If you’ve been reading my blog for any length of time, you’ve come to know that there are many teachers, and many ways of living, that can help you prevent dis-ease and assist you in living a long and vibrant life.

Let’s look at those teachers again. And the practices that go well beyond food.

We all know people who can live to be almost any age, by eating white cake everyday, which as much as that exasperates me, also proves that all the cells of your body are LISTENING to you, your beliefs, your words, and the environment you place them in.

We don’t know if people are happy, think positive and hopeful thoughts, or not, but we can see the effects of their thoughts, happy people who laugh and joke, but eat the worst diets, smoke, drink alcohol, and so on–yet seemingly live fairly well.

Then there are those who fall over with a heart attack while jogging. Maybe they were sad, angry, resentful, or suffering from an aching heart.

Sometimes, it just makes no sense. And there seems to be no rhyme or reason to why some people live long lives and others die young.

There are many different schools of thought about a variety of subjects. And who gets to be the one authority on any one topic anyway?

So, this list includes everyone in my circle who promote exercise, healthy eating habits, and mindful practices (yes, some religious / spiritual, though I realize people who claim to be atheists, can also live long and healthy lives).

Who do you follow? What are your daily practices? Do they make you FEEL good when you do them? If so, I think you’re probably on a pretty good path for yourself. I am not here to judge.

I heard it said that the best exercise is the one you’ll DO! And that has proven to be true in my experience. I love the benefits of walking, Qigong, Pilates, Yamuna, yoga, deep breathing, and singing, so I continue to practice these.

I am here, as my mother was for me (in my younger years), to give you the benefit of helpful people and things that I’ve found. But my way does not have to be your way.

If you saw what I eat on a daily basis, you’d think I’d be thin, or at the very least of a “normal” weight, but I struggle with the extra 60-80 pounds I put on during a traumatic time of my life.

I lose 20-30 pounds for awhile, then slowly put it back on. I’ve paid thousands of dollars for diet books, classes, enzyme supplements, colonics, cleansing teas, doctor sponsored diet plans, and on and on, but I have not yet (I have hope) found one that really, truly, works for me. I even use EFT, Jin Shin Jyutsu, prayer, acupuncture, acupressure, reflexology, meditation, and so on also, to release the mental struggle in order to try to return to my pre-age 35 weight. But alas, I continue to seek to find a way back to my whole and healthy weight. I’ve even “let go” of the “trying to’s” and that seems to allow more weight to creep back on!

Here’s an example of one of my lunches (that I eat most weekdays, as most weekends I skip lunch in favor of a Greek egg omelet):

  • 4 Romaine lettuce leaves
  • Big slice of raw onion
  • 1/2 raw squash (or zucchini)
  • 2 or 3 slices of roasted turkey breast (optional)

Sheila Raw Salad lunch.JPG

Dressing:

  • 1 T Garlic
  • 1/2 t garlic powder
  • 1/4 t cajun or creole seasoning
  • Walnut and Olive oil
  • Dash of sea salt to taste

So, I am just a regular gal, hoping to connect you with some things, or people, who will assist you to be the person you want to be. I am a Connector. Don’t look to me to be perfect. True art only finds and honors the imperfection anyway. If life were perfect and everyone was the same, it would be boring. Embrace the drama–just a little bit, and use it to make better, consistently joyous choices. That’s about as good as it gets.

Much love, and many blessings to you in ALL ways,

sheila

What do you know about CBD oil?

CBD is short for Cannabidiol. And typically it comes from the marijuana plant, but it can also be taken from the hemp plant. CBD oil from hemp is not psychoactive like the CBD oil from marijuana.

Said another way, CBD oil from marijuana is sometimes given to patients by a medical doctor now that medical marijuana is legal in many states. However, CBD oil from the hemp plant is legal in all 50 states! Again, this is because it is not psychoactive.

To date, I have tried four different brands of CBD oil, and each is of a different milligram, viscosity, and taste. I believe one of the four brands produces better brain function for myself, but all have reduced nervous tension in my mind and body–to more or less of a degree, perhaps depending upon their formulation and processing. Email me for more specifics as to the brands.

You can go to the Pub Med government site and search using the terms “CBD” and “ailment” (substituting whatever ailment you have for the second term) to be able to find studies relating to the benefits of CBD oil. In the following example, I entered “CBD” and “alzheimer’s disease” and it returned 229 search results! Even if only one of the results was positive, you bet that I considered it a valid result for me to give CBD oil the old college try! Wow!!

Government Studies –> https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/
Over 23,000 studies relating to CBD oil there that include:

Cannabidiol Oil for Decreasing Addictive Use of Marijuana: A Case Report.

This case study illustrates the use of cannabidiol (CBD) oil to decrease the addictive use of marijuana and provide anxiolytic and sleep bene ts. Addiction to marijuana is a chronic, relapsing disorder, which is becoming a prevalent condition in the United States. The most abundant compound in the marijuana, which is called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), has been widely studied and known for its psychoactive properties.

The second most abundant component-CBD-has been suggested to have the medicinal e ects of decreasing anxiety, improving sleep, and other neuro-protective e ects. The mechanism of action for CBD has been suggested to be antagonistic to the psychoactive properties of THC in many locations within the central nervous system. Such action raises the issue of whether it might be bene cial to use CBD in isolation to facilitate withdrawal of marijuana use. The speci c use of CBD for marijuana reduction has not been widely studied.

The patient was a 27-y-old male who presented with a long-standing diagnosis of bipolar disorder and a daily addiction to marijuana use. In the described intervention, the only change made to the patient’s treatment was the addition of CBD oil with the dosage gradually decreasing from 24 to 18 mg. With use of the CBD oil, the patient reported being less anxious, as well as settling into a regular pattern of sleep. He also indicated that he had not used any marijuana since starting the CBD oil. With the decrease in the dosage to 18 mg, the patient was able to maintain his nonuse of marijuana.

The reason that CBD oil is important to me:

My mother is in advanced stages of Alzheimer’s. I have the hopes that this oil will help her, as well as act as a preventive supplement for me. After taking CBD oil (email me for brand specific information) for only 4 days I noticed a big change in my mood (less nervous tension at work) and ability to think faster (better mental processing speed) with improved mental clarity and focus! I really feel it’s brain food for me. I also fall asleep faster at night, and my hubby says I snore less too! In addition, I went from not being able to remember four names a day to ONE! (An example of my improved memory function).

A few others who have noticed improvements since taking CBD oil:

KK: teenage daughter has noticed that it helps calm her + fall and stay asleep!

KB: I have noticed more clarity; better able to focus, mush less arm and shoulder pain and it is helping me sleep better!

KE: I feel alive!!!! Energized! Sleeping through the night for the first time in years. Also, heel discomfort is so much better.

MF: No more racing thoughts for me.

TR: Best thing for my pain. I feel great!

TD: My mind has calmed, yet my energy has increased. I have a very physical job, so the level of energy this gives me is such a gift! Much less inflammation and joint pain. I’ll take it for the rest of my life.

Ease Arthritis and more with Nordic Light Fish and Krill Oil

Most of us over the age of 40 have heard of, or even take a daily supplement of some kind of fish oil. Easy to take Nordic Light Fish and Krill Oil capsules can replace your yucky tasting cod liver oil! The less known krill is a prawn-like creature found in all oceans and is very high in nutrients.

The story behind Nordic Light Fish and Krill Oil is fascinating!

Nordic Light Fish and Krill Oil.jpg

There was once a North Norwegian fisherman, Arild Karlsen, who wanted everyone to enjoy the health benefits offered by the delicacies of the sea, in pill form.

Arild was helped by a person who has the doctorate at Omega3 at the University of Tromsø to develop an energy capsule consisting of 70 percent omega 3 and 30 percent krill oil based on small prawns.

As the fisherman was superstitious, he wanted to obtain the raw ingredients from the Arctic Ocean. This was because the light there has a magical effect on both people and fish; hence the product was given the “Nordic Light” name.

“We have spent five years achieving what we wanted to achieve with Nordic Light,” recounts the fisherman-come-businessman. According to Karlsen, the entire process has been carried through on the back of a genuine desire to help people. He talks of customers who have recovered from everything from psoriasis to arthritis.

Customers have reported having more energy, and that their fingernails become stronger too!

Professor Tore Seternes demonstrates the effects of the capsule in the following way: he gets two glasses of water at body temperature. To the first glass, he adds pure omega 3. This forms a film. Omega 3 and krill oil are then added to the other glass. This mixes evenly and easily with the water.

“This fairytale-like mixture is easily adsorbed by the body. Customers therefore also experience rapid and positive improvement,” says founder Arild Karlsen.

Arctic Light Products Ltd. is a Tromsø-based trading company in Norway, which was founded in 2010 on the recommendation from Innovation Norway, and is owned by Irene Karlsen–the entrepreneur’s wife.

The beneficial oil is a blend of Omega 3 & Krill oil product that is sold under the brand name Nordic Light, specifically called, Nordic Light Fish and Krill Oil. Arctic Light supplies health food products directly from Norwegian producers to customers and distributors in the market.

Arctic Light Products.png

Arctic Light Products AS (AS ALP) activity began with an idea to create the best fishing oil product on the market today. The founder has personal experience of many years as both a fisherman, fishing boat captain, and fishing boat owner / captain of the fishing boat trawler before starting the development of the Arctic Light Products.

Arctic Light Products provide one of the cleanest product of its kind on the market, with a mixture of 70% highly concentrated Omega 3 (not of the liver), but from fish meat and 30% Krill Oil. Nordic Light Krill & Fish Oil is a product of high quality, it consists of 70% high grade Omega-3 and 30% Krill oil.

The fact that Nordic Light Krill & Fish Oil contains a mixture of fish oil and krill oil, makes this product unique. Because the absorption of Omega-3 in the body becomes much more efficient. Normal fish oil Omega3 uptake is about 45%, but Nordic Light Krill & Fish Oil has Omega3 that ca.92-94%, this is because when the phospholipids of krill oil is mixed with fish oil it mixes very easily and becomes soluble in water within the body. And this means that the absorption of Omega-3 is much larger.

Nordic Light.jpg

Anyone who has seen the Northern Lights know that it makes an impression. It is said that this light has a magical affect both humans and fish in the sea. The raw material in Nordic Light Fish and Krill Oil comes from aurora ocean. The name of the Northern Light came to the founder through his wife while he was working with to find the right color of the product, the red heart color.

The whole process has been completed by a sincere desire to help people who need a product that is unlike other fish oil produced from the liver. The mixture is 70% high grade Omega 3 and 30% Krill oil and has produced good positive results.

It also confirms the Karlsen’s belief that it was right to focus on quality, quality and quality of the entire line.

Arild and Irene Karlsen, the makers of Nordic Light Fish and Krill Oil were blessed to find the expertise they needed to produce this fine quality product in Tromso.

The factory where Nordic Light Fish and Krill Oil is made is located in Troms–in the northernmost part of Norway. The Nordic Light name comes from this geographical interest. Raw materials and production are from this pure northern region.

Healing Asthma

I wrote the following brief description to Oprah and Dr. Oz about how I became asymptomatic (meaning having no symptoms) of asthma. I sent it to them July 5th, 2014.

I reversed asthma in my body over ten years ago!

How?

By going for several acupuncture treatments over a period of several months, getting off  of five (5) prescription medications, taking adaptagenic herbs (from my doctor of oriental medicine), removing dairy from my diet, adding garlic capsules (by the help of a certified holistic nutritionist) to cut mucous, going for massage sessions using therapeutic essential oils, and practicing several calming measures like prayer and yoga.

I am no longer chained to the healthcare system.

I have been writing about my experience and continue to live a holistic healthy life.

I can breathe very deep and full. And I take NO medications, saving myself thousands of dollars in insurance premiums and co-pays!

I don’t care if I’m an anecdotal case. I am well and vital again!

At the heart of each of us, whatever our imperfections, there exists a silent pulse of perfect rhythm, which is absolutely individual and unique and yet which connects us to everything else. — George Leonard

Are you scared of Acupuncture?

It never fails to amaze me just how many people will say no to having acupuncture. Just today, (at Awakening Wellness Center in St Petersburg, Florida) I met a lady who was in extreme back pain and for some reason, said no to the offer of a low-cost acupuncture session. (She did get a massage and Reiki).

It made me wonder, “Why are people scared of receiving an acupuncture treatment?”

Could it be the needles? The needles used in acupuncture are the size of a human hair. If you’ve ever had a tattoo or any vaccine, that hurts so much worse! Acupuncture doesn’t hurt. You might feel a twinge or electrical kind of feeling though, but nothing like sticking your finger in an electrical outlet. Just enough for you to know something is actually working–and alive inside of you.

Could it be they don’t take this healing modality seriously? Because it is well documented in scientific communities to work–even students in medical school see one movie in their curriculum about acupuncture (having to do with acupuncture being used on a patient undergoing surgery instead of anesthesiology)!

Or could the fear be related to their beliefs? If so, I have a lot to share with you my friend–about “limiting beliefs”!

Let me encourage you to give acupuncture a try and challenge your beliefs about it, especially if you are in pain or dealing with a chronic dis-ease.

Acupuncture put me on a path back to wellness and relieved asthma (which I had experienced for more than thirty years) within a six month period, and also relieved the extreme pain I’d experience a few years ago from an ovarian cyst.

Every body is different. So, I can’t say, nor can anyone really, how much acupuncture can help you. But if you can’t even bring yourself to try it, you’ll certainly never know!

My first acupuncture (doctor of Oriental Medicine) was able to help me quit five (5) pharmaceutical drugs (many of which, I had taken for years!) back in 2005. Sadly for me, she moved away–but then so did we. She had been an oncology nurse for twenty-six (26) years and went back to school, and spent $50k to become a doctor of OM because she was seeing teenage girls come in for oncology treatments for breast cancer!!! She knew in her gut, intuition, or spirit, that this was just plain WRONG! (If you want to know more about my first acupuncture doctor–connect with me on LinkedIn and read my glowing review for Joan Massey.)

As for me, yes, I changed my diet. I quit dairy products. And I started taking garlic capsules and using frankincense essential oil (Young Living brand–and I represent that brand now, though I also use and am certified to apply DoTERRA oils also). I restarted a yoga practice–which I had practiced as a teenager–for it’s breathing and additional health benefits. I also began documenting everything I did in hopes of writing a book about my experience.

At one point, during my exit from pharmaceutical meds I got the flu, or what felt like the flu to me. When I couldn’t stop coughing, and was urinating blood, my husband took me to the emergency room. After tests were run, I was told that I didn’t have the flu–and that you can’t get the flu in the summer (which is an outright lie), but that I did have a urinary tract infection. I’d had those before, but never with the kinds of symptoms I was experiencing.

Looking back, I wonder if I was detoxing from the medications. It was the most horrific illness I had ever experience in my life–and I was out of work for 7 whole days–more than I had ever missed in my entire twenty year full-time technology career.

All this to say, I remember telling my husband at the time–while laying in bed feeling as if I would die–I don’t care who I have to see, a shaman, priest, tribal medicine man/woman, or a witch doctor, but God, help me!

And all of these years later, if I felt that bad again, I would do the same thing.

What do you know about Enzymes?

Hello bright and happy BEings!

What do you know about enzymes and how they work in the body?

Quite frankly, all I knew was that fresh raw fruits and veggies contain enzymes, which was why my body seemed to work and feel better when I was eating a high raw vegan diet back a few years ago. And what I didn’t know, actually fills a book! The “Everything You Need to Know About Enzymes” book, to be exact, written by Tom Bohager.

A friend had mentioned that she has been taking digestive enzymes to me for years, but I kind of dismissed her advice that I should also try taking them, because I really thought I was still getting enough enzymes from my 50% raw diet. However, I’ve been reading this book, and listening to my body (particularly after meals) and realizing that my friend was right–I needed to supplement. At least, I needed to TRY enzyme supplementation.

So, I went to Richard’s Foodporium and bought a generic brand of “Super Enzymes” mostly because they were the least expensive bottle on the shelf for 180 capsules. And I didn’t notice much difference. Thus, I quit taking them. Then I found a bottle of Vegyzyme enzymes in the cabinet from when I had been on a  previous “doctor recommended” diet program awhile back. I knew they were probably outdated, so I went back to the store to see what else I could learn about enzymes, check out the other brands, and ask why there we so many different kinds of enzymes on the shelf.

That’s when I found that Enzymedica was nearly a local enzyme manufacturer to where we’re currently living–they’re made just a couple of hours south of us. That was the first thing that intrigued me, but it certainly wouldn’t be the last.

I reached out to Enzymedica (by way of Facebook), and mentioned my interest in their products (and company) and they generously offered to send me a bottle to try in exchange for an honest review.

The following is what I experienced from taking all of the Enzymedica Digest Gold capsules during a three-week period, as recorded in my iPhone Notepad (so I could monitor the changes):

The first couple days I felt bloated after eating. Note: I reached back out to Enzymedica, after the first two days and explained about the bloating I’d experienced and learned that “if you aren’t used to a high-potency formula, sometimes a little digestive discomfort can occur early on.”

By day 3, I found that if I took the enzyme capsule on an empty stomach with water, just prior to eating, that I was not bloated after I completed my meal.

After 6 days, I began feeling really good after eating! And I seemed to have more energy.

Since I began feeling better, I didn’t need to take Enzymedica’s additional advice of, “If it persists, you can try our lower potency products like Digest Basic and Digest. Both work really well!”

What some people might not admit, is that I forgot to take an enzyme capsule before my meals a few times during the first three weeks. And that you can take more than one capsule before eating if your bloating continues to occur. I didn’t try that. I consumed this enzyme supplement happily, knowing I would feel much more content after eating. I noticed that only those times I bloated, or had an “over full” kind of feeling in my tummy, had been the times that I’d forgotten to take the capsule. As soon as I resumed taking the Digest Gold capsule before meals, that heavy “stuffed” feeling after the meals went away.

All the while I was experimenting with taking the Digest Gold capsules, I’d been reading the “Everything You Need to Know About Enzymes” book, and learning what I needed in regards to proper enzyme supplementation. The book includes a super informative chart that explains what enzymes are, which one does what in the body, a quiz to know which enzymes you might need to take, and many pages about the various diseases and ailments that consuming proper enzymes can alleviate! It was quite eye-opening and fascinating!

I’ll share a bit of this information (paraphrased) below:

  • Amylase – Breaks down carbs like starch and glycogen; regulates histamine when taken on an empty stomach (can you begin to see how just this ONE enzyme could help people who have allergies?); reduces food cravings (helpful to someone on a diet); increases blood sugar. (Note: the book provides even more details, and the parenthetical comments here are my own.)
  • Cellulase – Breaks down cellulose and chitin (which is found in the cell wall of Candida / yeast); can loose more nutrients from the cell wall of fruits and vegetables.
  • Lipase – Breaks down lipids and fats, helping to assimilate fats; reduces cholesterol, aids weight loss, supports hormone production; supports gallbladder function;
  • Protease – Breaks down protein; supports immune function when taken on an empty stomach; reduces inflammation and increases circulation.
  • All of the preceding are available from different sources and can be blended to increase potency

There are many more listed in the book and some aid reduction of mucus in the body, are anti-inflammatory, and so on! What a cornucopia of healthful benefits from a handful of enzymes! I am amazed!

To put the Enzymedica’s Digest Gold under the microscope and compare it to the Super Enzymes and Vegyzyme I’d previously taken, for brevity’s sake, I’ll just compare their main enzyme contents:

Per 1 capsule:

Enzymedica’s Digest Gold contains:
Amylase – 23,000 DU (dose equivalent)
Protease – 80,000 HUT
Lipase – 4,000 FCCFIP
Cellulase – 3,000 CU

Super Enzymes contains:
Amylase – 37,000 USP Units
Protease – 37,000 USP Units
Lipase – 2,960 USP Units (Note: Amylase, Protease, and Lipase the label states are together known as Pancreatin and is 134mg)
Cellulase – 10 CU / .1mg

Vegyzyme contains:
Amylase – 4,000 DU (dose equivalent)
Protease – 10,000 HUT
Lipase – 43.4 LU
Cellulase – 30 CU

Note: USP Units are defined as, “a dose unit as recommended by the United States Pharmacopoeia, the primary legally recognized national drug-standardcompendium. Almost all prescription medications are now distributed on a mass basis rather than a unit basis.” Citation: Mosby’s Medical Dictionary, 9th edition. © 2009, Elsevier.

Some unit equivalencies have been found as follows:

1 HUT = approx. 6.5 USP
1 DU = approx. 48 USP
LU/FCCFIP = No conversion available to USP

Extra Note: Not all enzyme units compare the same. For example, it has been found that Protease is measured in HUTs or Hemoglobin Unit Tyrosine, Amylase in DUs or Alpha-amalyse Dextrinizing units, Lipase is measured in FCCFIPs or LUs, and Cellulase in CUs or Cellulase units. This seems to be set up to make it difficult for a lay person–who’s not a scientist–to be able to compare unit amounts found on enzyme labels. I have only made an attempt (by way of this article) to begin to understand this subject. It seems to be much more complex than can be understood by reading one book.

As always, I suggest working with your wellness team to ensure you’re taking the proper supplements and doses for your particular health situation.

Supplemental Enzyme Therapy page

I am especially interested in some suggestions the book provides about using enzyme supplementation to alleviate allergies and to lose weight. I think I’ll focus on one issue at a time though, until I can fully incorporate the changes since it involves taking one supplement prior to every meal and others in between meals. I’ll write additional articles on those topics, so stay tuned!

Meet Dr. Len Bauduin –an incredible man, healer, and holistic chiropractor

This article cites my originally published article of Nov. 16, 2013 on EXAMINER

After going up north–to be with my daughter while she birthed our glorious twin granddaughters–last week, sleeping on a hospital pull-out chair bed for three nights, then the flight home, lugging a suitcase in/out of a car, and so forth, it shouldn’t have, but it did, surprise me that while I was getting into our truck last week–I tweaked my back. Yes. Some little movement that I do every day and ZING! I began experiencing sciatica pain (which I rarely ever feel) down both legs to the knees!!!

Slowly, I was able to eek through a couple days with it (knowing that I needed to work), and I went to Pilates to try and “put it back in place”, but that was excruciating! I rolled around on the floor, utilizing my Yamuna gold ball, but though I got some relief, I knew this was going to need more help. I felt that I needed a chiropractic adjustment.

When I called Carol to ask about an appointment, she explained that Dr. Len had an unexpected death in his family–I was so sorry to hear that and told her that I completely understood and I could go somewhere else. But, because Dr. Len is who he is–he would be available to see me in a couple of days. Yes, he continued working, helping people like me feel better.

As another example of how huge Dr. Len’s heart is, and his truly compassionate nature, he had not raised his office visit fee for 18 years–until recently! How much did he raise it? $5 whole dollars. Can you imagine??? I mean, I was so stunned that I smiled and told Carol, his equally as compassionate administrative assistant, that it should be $150 million dollars!!!

From performing acupuncture on my back to “loosen things up” and get Energy flowing, to Dr. Len’s genuine conversation about “what’s wrong”, muscle testing to find the root cause, and then a quick but amazing chiropractic adjustment, I can’t really describe how much better I feel! I think when a person’s back hurts, teeth, or head, it’s difficult to focus on anything.

It is for all of these reasons, that I give Dr. Len Bauduin my highest recommendation.

I previously wrote the following review for Dr. Bauduin and it still holds true today, with even more love and grace.

I had the blessed experience of having two treatments performed by Dr. Bauduin at Madeira Beach Center for Natural Medicine. And wow, wow, wow!

During an episode at work, while talking on the phone and typing on my laptop keyboard, I did a stupid thing (I say, “stupid” because I honestly knew better than to do this). But, during a teleconference I had needed to type while holding the telephone receiver, so I’d placed the receiver between my shoulder and head! What’s worse, I had held the receiver in this position while typing! Maybe I could have gotten away with this for one or two minutes, but for the length of time I held this weird position it was enough to pull or tweak something in my back. Next morning, ouch! Not so much a pain, but definitely a kink and irritation.

As the week went on, I tried my yoga postures, different exercises, having my husband massage my back, and moves a former chiropractor had told me about, as I had this situation happen years ago.

Before I’d learned how to self-correct, but mostly it was not to perform that action, so as not to get my back into that situation. I’d just forgotten.

So, here I was, in a new town, with a back that continued to irritate me for a week. Finally, I broke down and Googled,“holistic chiropractor.” That’s when I found Madeira Beach Center for Natural Medicine.

I thought I just needed a chiropractic adjustment and I’d be all fixed, especially since I hadn’t even needed to go to a doctor in over a year – other than this twinge in my mid back I felt great! Well, as it turned out, the acupuncture treatment in conjunction with the chiropractic adjustment was exactly what I needed!

Dr. Bauduin is so masterful that when he met me for my initial treatment he laid his hands on my head while I was seated in a chair, and could essentially “read” my issue in a matter of a minute or two. He went on to perform acupuncture on my upper back, then chiropractic. Two procedures in one visit! Wow! In an hour I was in and out of the office (fee for first time patients? $80.) which for me, I found very inexpensive and I felt as though I was walking on a cloud! Fantastic! I considered the fee inexpensive since I had paid a holistic veterinarian $91 for my dogs’ Tui Na acupuncture treatment.

I had never experienced a doctor who could provide both acupuncture and chiropractic before, so I had no expectation or understanding of how the two modalities would work together.

Turns out, the acupuncture releases the muscles so the chiropractic adjustment can be more easily accomplished. I felt so much better it was actually hard to believe, so I went back a week later for a follow up session. Once again Dr. Bauduin performed acupuncture and chiropractic – this time for only a $50 fee!

Obviously, I’m so pleased with these treatments and Dr. Bauduin – this is why I’m singing his praises in the this article.

I wholly recommend Dr. Bauduin if you have any need at all for acupuncture or chiropractic, and if you don’t know whether you have need or not, but have any health issue – give Carol a call at their office and ask. Your body may thank you more than you can imagine!
