Book review: Echoes From Punjab

Echoes from Punjab was a deeply moving and enchanting story to read! The following is my heartfelt book review:

As a reader and author of non-fiction works, I am delightfully surprised by this beautiful novel, which was so well written that it could be non-fiction!
From the velvety soft book cover, to the pacing, the story moves at such an elegant pace, it can keep a reader meaningfully engaged from beginning to end.

As I read this endearing story, I learned some Indian words–even some new English words! I laughed, cried, and experienced many emotions–all the while I read about Jasmine’s journey.
Jasmine, the central figure and main character, has led a similar life to mine, except that I only moved to a different state in the USA, not to a completely different country (so obviously I did not have the racial or language challenges she had).
I so enjoyed the way the author interlaced descriptions of places in India, Indian history, and lots of Punjabi (the 10th most widely spoken language in the world) into her novel. For example, in Chapter 2 – The Land of Milk and Honey, Daljit teaches us, “Tussi Punjabi ho” [you are Punjabi] as very early on in the story Jasmine meets a stranger in the U.S.A. who is also from Punjab. Somehow I knew I would love this book just by seeing the title of this chapter–as this is indeed what America is–The Land of Milk and Honey!
Speaking of favorites, Chapter 6 – The Twins knocked my socks off! My daughter is expecting twins and lives far from me, plus, I’d only recently learned of this glorious news when I began reading Echoes from Punjab! Obviously, synchronicity was working spectacularly for me! I read this chapter and the many to follow about Jasmine’s twins with eager excitement! I could really visualize so much of this story… Oh!! I love it so much!
I also truly grasped the richness of the vivid imagery the author detailed, both in the Indian scenes and in the northeastern U.S.A. Since, I lived a good many years of my life in the northeast, and traveled to many of the destinations that Daljit writes about, I had those scenes well set in my imagination. When she took me to India, a place I’ve only seen in many movies, well, I could paint them easily from her words.
What is hard to imagine is just how far away Punjab is from America. I’ve talked with several coworkers from India over the last few years who have tried to explain the travel time and how tiring it can be, so I have an inkling–but mostly it’s mind boggling to think about the actual distance, time, and money involved in the travel. Chapter 9 with its aptly fitting title, The Journey, does its best to convey about the burdensome travel though. This chapter gives us shocking twists and turns in the drama of what is becoming Jasmine’s life–I won’t tell you what happens as I don’t want to spoil it for you–but I can say, that again, I’ve shared some of these life experiences and oh, how good it is to have them behind me!
On one particular page during The Journey, I can tell you that I absolutely agree that “I love my country as I love my mother but that does not mean I cannot see its shortcomings.” I have so much respect for people who leave their home to go live in another country, as until I read Echoes from Punjab, I could barely imagine how one could be so far from loved ones, deal with a different language, culture, time zones, currency, racism, and so on! I have a hard enough time dealing with the fact that I have dear loved ones several states away from me within our own country, much less having to deal with all of those other pressures! I also believe one must really be dedicated to make such a sacrifice.
The Distressed Visit, Chapter 12 was intensely emotional for me. I was “with” Jasmine in every gut-wrenching moment! Having lost several friends in my life already, I know the pain of what she must have felt, and I grieved with her. When you have to say goodbye to friends, especially so far away, and when you have not seen them face to face in a long time, it can be especially difficult. Our family and friends are so important to us all! I think I now realize why so many people do not move away from their home places!
Chapter 20 – The Weddings, was as bright, light, and uplifting as The Distressed Visit was sad! Through Echoes from Punjab you get all of the ups, downs, good, not-so-good, colors, sounds, and intensity of life that one could want. I would smile and laugh, then reminisce of times gone by. I definitely could correlate several times of my life, alongside Jasmine’s up and down experiences. Thus, in the end, through sadness, grief, joy, and bewilderment, I shared her humanity. And I will be forever grateful to a new yet, dear friend who was thoughtful enough to gift me with this timeless book. (Thank you Rekha!)

7 takeaways from meeting Sadhguru during his first American book tour

A once-in-a-lifetime experience!

I–along with 2000 other people–recently attended a book launch event for Sadhguru’s first American book and New York Times Best Seller, “Inner Engineering, A Yogi’s Guide to Joy.”

Sadhguru website photo.png

I totally loved the live musical performances offered while we all gathered in the Van Wezel auditorium (in Sarasota, Florida). And to think, all of the singers and musicians traveling with Sadhguru are volunteers! What a glorious gift! I love how enchanting Indian music is, especially the sitar, which has to be one of the most amazing instruments ever invented! My heart was dancing in the abundance of the vibrations!

Sadhguru will be visiting 42 cities this year, so attend if at all possible. Your ears will be delighted and your heart and consciousness will expand from the profound and practical wisdom shared.

Check this website for the other cities where Sadhguru will be speaking, and get tickets. You won’t want to miss this opportunity to sit at the feet of this gentle, wise contemporary yogi’s feet.

After the musical performances, Dr. Kiran Patel gave an insightful and stirring introduction of Sadhguru. And then the moment arrived…

As Sadhguru was about to enter the stage, a hush fell over the entire auditorium, as such, you could have heard a pin drop! It was like 2000 people were holding their collective breath! Sadhguru meekly, yet with what I would call, powerful command of knowing, walked out and sat down in a “not so comfortable chair”, center stage.

We did not know whether he would speak first, or lead us in meditation, sing, or what! So, we eagerly anticipated… I could feel the Energy in the room–nearly palpable!

Sadhguru began by asking us a question, “How many of you have experienced even one day of joy in your lives?”

Several hands went up.

But, continuing, Sadhguru brought the real issue to the surface of our minds. How to sustain joy.

During Sadhguru’s talk, he used stories from his life to illustrate the variety of predicaments we each seem to get ourselves into, and how we can find the pleasantness–even in the moment of some, perhaps not so pleasant of an experience.

One of the questions I had was whether or not once one reaches “enlightenment”, does everything become, well, easier? And the answer seemed to be “yes.”

Sadhguru explained how he continues to change and grow in the field of pure positive potentiality. Ahh… even after explaining about his childhood and experience of enlightenment, he said “one does not just reach enlightenment and then that’s it.”

I literally took many things away from my experience with Sadhguru, and am continuing to grasp more ideas, concepts, and tools while reading Inner Engineering, but for purposes of this article, I thought I’d share my 7 takeaways from this event:

  1. Most of us have experience joy, but find it nearly impossible to sustain it
  2. Peace and joy are the basis of our life, not goals to be achieved
  3. Pleasantness leads to peace and joy–and other people are attracted to you when you are pleasant
  4. We can never find pleasantness outside of us, if we do not first find pleasantness inside of ourselves. Yes, it is an inside job.
  5. Tools exist that can help each of us find the pleasantness inside–we do not have to “recreate the wheel” so to speak, or “go it alone”–and these simple and powerful tools are explained in Sadhguru’s book, “Inner Engineering:  A Yogi’s Guide to Joy” which will guide you towards the well-being and joy that you seek.
  6. Only our physical senses limit us. Yoga is not only a physical “workout”, but rather it’s defined as “to yoke” with the “dimensionless unity of absolute perfection” that exists everywhere–We Are All One
  7. What is pleasing to you, may not be pleasing to me, but each together weave a beautiful tapestry when we let go of our need to control each other’s perception of reality

While enjoying Sadhguru’s event, I was in a state of awe, as I had predicted. Not just of Sadhguru as a man, mystic, or master, but of the shared vibratory resonance that occurred in that one place.

At the event, Americans of many different nationalities were tuned human instruments playing a delightful symphony of be-ing. We listened intently. We laughed with Sadhguru as he related funny stories. We sang with him. We clapped. And finally, we meditated as Sadhguru led us in a shared meditation, the likes of which, I had never experienced before. It certainly put me in a pleasant blissful resonance!

I have been watching Sadhguru on YouTube, since being introduced to Pranayama breathing only recently. Literally, within days of my beginning to practice my newly learned breathing techniques, I found myself at a film screening (I’d been invited with only two days notice, and I just simply knew that I must attend) whereby I was given the most thrilling news that Sadhguru would be visiting locally–SOON!

From the official Press Release (shared with permission):

Inner Engineering: A Yogis Guide to Joy helps one to master the most sophisticated machine on the planet — the human being. During his North American Fall Tour, world renowned yogi and visionary humanitarian, Sadhguru, will introduce the new book, which will be released September 20th. Sadhguru will be touring 17 cities during his North American Fall Tour with an event planned in Sarasota on September 25th at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall.

For the first time, Sadhguru will present Western readers with a path to achieving absolute well-being through the classical science of yoga in a practical, accessible book. The wisdom distilled in this transformative book offers readers time-tested tools for creating inner situations exactly the way you want them, turning you into the architect of your own joy.

Sadhguru presents a philosophical and practical introduction to the power and profundity of yoga – as he puts it, “not as acrobatics or metaphysics, but as an empirical science that makes you the master of your own destiny…(this book) is an invitation to each one of you to turn from an armchair reader into a dynamic participant on an ecstatic journey inward.”

A yogi lives life in this expansive state and in this transformative book Sadhguru shares the story of his own awakening, from a boy to a young daredevil, to the moment of his enlightenment on a mountaintop in India, where time stood still, and he emerged radically changed.

“My aim in this book is to help make joy your constant companion. To make that happen, this book offers you not a sermon, but a science; not a teaching, but a technology; not a precept, but a path,” explains Sadhguru in the book’s forward.

Today, as the founder of Isha Foundation, a worldwide nonprofit organization, and classical yoga retreat centers in both the East and West, he lights the path for millions like you. Isha’s international retreat center based in the western world is the Isha Institute of Inner-sciences situated in Tennessee’s own spectacular Upper Cumberland just one hour northwest of Chattanooga, TN.

Just following the book release will be Isha’s popular, annual World Peace Day celebration September 24th, hosted at the Tennessee center. The World Peace Day celebration is an annual daylong event in honor of the United Nations International Day of Peace. World Peace Day is dedicated to cultivating peaceful possibilities within ourselves and our world through creative expression, celebration, yoga and meditation in the idyllic natural setting of the Foundation’s breathtaking Upper Cumberland retreat center.

Sadhguru is known around the world for large-scale humanitarian, educational, and environmental projects carried out by Isha Foundation, which he founded in 1992.   Supported by over three million volunteers worldwide, the objective of all the Foundations activities is to empower the individual to realize the ultimate potential within, and to promote a global climate of inclusiveness and harmony. Sadhguru has been an honored guest and speaker at distinguished forums and institutions including the United Nations, The World Economic Forum, Harvard, Wharton, Microsoft, TED, Google, and more.

Inner Engineering is a fascinating read of Sadhguru’s insights and his teaching. If you are ready, it is a tool to help awaken your own inner intelligence, the ultimate and supreme genius that mirrors the wisdom of the cosmos.” – Deepak Chopra

“I am inspired by Sadhguru’s capacity for joy, his exuberance for life, and the depth and breadth of his curiosity and knowledge. His book is filled with moments of wonder, awe, and intellectual challenge. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in self-transformation.” —Mark Hyman, MD, Director, Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, and New York Times bestselling author

Good-Gums tooth powder instead of toothpaste

Combination of two articles originally published on EXAMINER Sept. 20, 2014 and July 9, 2014

Good-Gums tooth powder, a healthful toothpaste alternative and natural remedy, has been this author’s daily dental product for many years, reversing several gum and dental issues, as well as providing a glistening clean.

I’ve been using Good-Gums since 2013 and have naturally reversed receding gums and gingivitis! It’s hard for me to estimate just how much money and pain this wonderful Good-Gums product has saved me!!

Good-Gums in my hand

I had been without dental insurance for about a year and a half so I had been looking for some non fluoride toothpaste (while shopping at the market) the day I was introduced to Good-Gums. The product’s creator, Isabelle Dunkeson, explained we can use Good-Gums just as easily as we use toothpaste.

I had previously undergone deep scaling cleaning for pre-periodontal disease and gingivitis! I certainly did NOT want to go through that ordeal again as it was quite painful (even with the numbing shots)! So, if that’s your issue, also consider gently brushing (or better yet, “massaging”) your gums.

So, I bought a bottle of Good-Gums and took it home. I followed the instructions and brushed faithfully – including my gums – daily. A couple of months went by. I noticed I was having a lot less bleeding when I flossed. I also noticed the tooth sensitivity I had previously experienced was GONE.

After moving, starting a new job, and getting dental insurance again I went to a new dentist. He took the normal X-rays and gave me a thorough exam. I had NO cavities and NO sign of gingivitis or periodontal disease! NONE!

I must admit I was surprised. I knew I had been doing a good job with brushing and flossing (but I do not floss daily either as I know I should) and I had noticed that with Good-Gums my teeth always felt CLEAN – just like they do after a dental cleaning, but I really didn’t expect such a good report. Now I only wish I had been using Good-Gums my whole life!

When I did return to a dentist for a cleaning and to repair a crown, the new dental hygienist who cleaned my teeth didn’t even scold me for not flossing! Every previous cleaning I had always been scolded for not flossing daily. But now, it’s sure seems like Good-Gums had been doing such a good job for me that my lack of flossing didn’t matter! Now, I’m not suggesting you don’t need to floss, but at least for me, I found it did not matter that I had skipped some days!

The first product review I wrote for Good-Gums (Natural health and beauty product review: Good-Gums toothpaste replacement originally published on EXAMINER x date) became kind of well known–because Isabelle printed a ton of them and handed one out with each purchase of Good-Gums at the Sarasota Farmer’s Market. Yay!

I’ve returned many times to visit with Isabelle to get the whole scoop on Good-Gums and how she brought this fantastic health product to market. Eventually, I was honored to be interviewed by Phil Pagano of the Sarasota Farmer’s Market on behalf of Isabelle and Good-Gums.

I am happy to help this small company in any way I can to promote this amazing product that definitely has materialized via these folks “putting your money where your mouth is” and utilizing a grassroots type of marketing and promotion.

You can read more about (and order) this fantastic natural product here –>> Good-Gums.

So let me share with you how Good-Gums came to be produced. When Isabelle Dunkeson originally formulated Good-Gums she thought she was only doing so to alleviate her own gum issues. Little did she know just how many people she would help, how many people’s gum issues would reverse, and how many teeth she’d save! I’d be thrilled if one persondoesn’t have to undergo dental or gum surgery from reading this article – so I know Isabelle lives a joyous life knowing how many people she’s helped! Isabelle’s Good-Gums formula not only cured her own dental issues but it’s helped so many others – including me!

In fact, in the Jan 2012 issue of the HSI newsletter I became fascinated with an article written by Michele Cagan that recounted the miraculous healing experience of a lady named Winnie Burke. Winnie was quoted as saying, “He (her dentist) told me I’d lose every one of my teeth. But I knew they were already getting better.” The article outlined Winnie’s experience in detail – to summarize, Winnie had very loose teeth when a friend suggested she try Good-Gums. Apparently she had a dental checkup just after beginning to use Good-Gums tooth powder. So when the dentist told her something contrary to what she was already beginning to experience (from a short time of using Good-Gums) that her teeth seemed to be tighter in her gums, she began to question his desire to perform gum surgery even if he pulled her teeth! You see, Good-Gums can help strengthen gums and save your loose teeth!

That particular article presents information many of us have encountered and it’s also something I talk about often. A doctor or dentist tells us something that just doesn’t quite feel true or right to us and almost bully us (because they wear the white coat and have degrees) into believing their knowledge trumps ours. But the moral of the story is, Winnie continued using Good-Gums and did not return to the dentist for three years. She never lost any of her teeth and saved herself from gum surgery! When she finally returned for a checkup the dental hygienist was surprised that after such a long time between visits Winnie had no pockets between her teeth and gums, minimal plaque, and NO cavities!

So what’s in Good-Gums and why is it so special? Well, part of the reason Good-Gums works so incredibly well is that it DOES NOT contain:

  • Glycerin
  • Fluoride
  • Toxic Chemicals
  • Harsh abrasives
  • Artificial ingredients

The reason Good-Gums works so beautifully is that it ONLY contains 100% non-toxic ingredients that contribute to healthy teeth and gums, such as:

  • French grey sea salt

Salt – not just any salt though. The French grey sea salt is ground to a very fine specification to limit abrasion; its known for it’s high mineral content and lowest sodium content.

  • Cinnamon

Cinnamon – Herbalists have used cinnamon for years to aid infants who experience teething pain because it offers mild anesthetic properties, along with antimicrobial action.

  • Cranberry

Cranberry offers the extraordinary benefits of making plaque less sticky. It’s one of the reasons cranberry works so well in the urinary tract, it helps keep bacteria from sticking to the urinary tubes so your body can more easily expel it.

And if you’re now beginning to wonder if dental plaque is the same as arterial plaque – which can cause heart attacks, I have an answer for you –> Click here.

  • Vitamin-C

Vitamin-C promotes healing of the connective tissue which, holds your teeth in place. Connective tissue depends on collagen, and collagen cannot be produced without vitamin-C! So the whole discussion about teeth not being bones, that kind of goes out the window when you think about this: you can’t have your teeth without the connective tissue that holds them in place!

  • Bio-flavinoid complex

Naturally occurring plant metabolites that possess the ability to neutralize reactive oxygen stabilizing molecules and breaking the oxidative chain – in other words, they are plant based antioxidants.

  • Peppermint

Peppermint for pain relief, calcium, magnesium, and other trace minerals. The peppermint herb is easily absorbed and soothing on the gums.

Finally, let’s talk about one of my favorite ingredients in Good-Gums:

  • Myrrh

Myrrh is a wonderfully ancient remedy referred to many times in the Bible and used in Germany and England to this day as an approved treatment for gingivitis is a highly beneficial ingredient in Good-Gums. Many of my readers know that I am a Young Living therapeutic essential oil distributor so yes, I know much about the healthy benefits of myrrh and other oils. Our medicine cabinet mostly only contains these helpful oils.

When I say “pure” ingredients the company that manufactures and bottles Good-Gums adheres to all the same standards and regulations as a pharmaceutical company does.

This product is so pure and natural, even pregnant women can use Good-Gums. It is well known that a baby extracts calcium and other minerals and nutrients from it’s mother’s food supply but perhaps also possibly robbing calcium or other minerals from her bones (though reportedly not from teeth – though bones and teeth are made of calcium, phosphorus, and other minerals). If a pregnant woman is not eating a nutritionally sound diet, the mom-to-be is very much encouraged by her obstetrician to take prenatal vitamins. But what is missed? Does the doctor refer her to a dentist, or other qualified dental practitioner to ensure the health of her teeth while she’s expecting? If she’s low on vitamin-C as I note above, then this could be the reason women who’ve had many pregnancies are correlated with having lost more teeth! You didn’t know that I’m a scientist, now did you? Ha!

Many men lose their teeth for a variety of reasons too! So, I realize pregnancy is not the only reason we need to use Good-Gums. In fact, every tooth is connected to a meridian in the body! You can Google “Meridian Tooth Chart” to learn more about the connection between teeth and acupuncture.

If you’ve ever wondered why some people do not ever have cavities or bad breath it may be due to their having a healthy gut, which means they have good intestinal flora. You can build up good gut flora by eating one cultured living food a day like yogurt, kefir, etc. Also, these people no doubt have a healthy biofilm on their teeth (in a healthy mouth every tooth has a film around it called a biofilm) and those people never have any dental problems. The ingredients in Good-Gums encourages a healthy biofilm – does your regular toothpaste?

An acquaintance of mine mentioned that she has receding gums and that her dental hygienist suggested that she should brush multiple times a day because of it. I commented, “so much for 40 years of fluoride huh?” (always my subtle way of saying it hasn’t been of any help – people still get cavities, root canals, crowns, bridges, and dentures as much as they always did) and she began to tell me about the importance of the deep cleaning ever three months!

When people are very strong in their belief system, I try not to get into a long conversation or enlighten them about alternatives. Pressing too hard about any particular subject usually either offends the person, or they won’t listen anyway. Also it seems to me that if what you are doing is working for you, who am I to question it. Go ahead! But for me, I would rather not go to the dentist, and not have that painful deep scaling and root planing. YUCK! I mean, I had a really good dentist and hygienist where we used to live, but even as good as they were, I prefer Good-Gums and my new brushing method better!

I really don’t want to knock your dentist, but honestly if fluoride was helpful, after 40+ years of it being pumped into our water and toothpaste – why would anyone get cavities? Whose interest is it in to keep us going back to the dentist? I certainly do NOT enjoy going to the dentist for crowns, bridges, and so forth! Lots of pain and EXPENSE!

Regular toothpaste that contains fluoride and other toxins is your mouth’s worst enemy because all it does is kill your teeth. Fluoride is plain old poison. Just read the label on YOUR current toothpaste! You’re encouraged not to swallow it, and to call poison control if you do! Unfortunately, it gets worse.

Toothpaste keeps Good-Gums from working effectively. Why?

Most toothpastes contain glycerin (even the ones found in health food stores) and glycerin actually coats teeth with a film that prevents your saliva from re-mineralizing your teeth! Yes, your body knows how to naturally heal and repair your teeth! Our body grows our teeth and heals a cut on our skin, so why should this concept shock you? If your teeth aren’t re-mineralizing it could be because of the glycerin in those products that coat the teeth.

Not only are fluoride and glycerin bad, but regular toothpaste contains harsh abrasives, preservatives, etc. Why eat organic food and then brush with pesticide and chemically laden toothpaste? Makes no sense to me!

You brush your teeth everyday, so even if you only absorb a small amount of the toxins and chemicals found in drugstore and grocery store toothpaste, you’re getting dosed twice a day, every day of your life!

If you’ve been told you need gum surgery I definitely suggest you give Good-Gums a try. After all, what do you have to lose? Good-Gums can only HELP bring health back to your gums, tighten your teeth, whiten, and allow your body to re-mineralize your teeth.

If like me, you believe every purchase you make equates to voting with your dollars, then you know the best way to nurture companies like Good-Gums is to keep buying and using their products.

Good-Gums has begun making a pet version of their product too! So, now your dog can naturally have healthy teeth and gums!

CD Review: Love Medicine by Shelley Morningsong is expressive and full of heart!

Originally published on EXAMINER(dot)com: April 5, 2015

Author note: 65 Facebook Likes!!! Wow! That’s got to be the most ever Facebook Likes that I received on any of my Examiner articles! Thank you, thank you!

———–

Yes I am branching out a bit to review a music CD: Love Medicine. I cherish these vibrant and expressive songs! Shelley Morningsong and Fabian Fontenelle, have written masterful and touching music that speak to our hearts.

It is only difficult for me to find the words that fully express the resonance I feel when I listen to their original songs. Shelley’s deep and strong vocals, blend and flow perfectly with the music. As Fabian joins her, their melodious voices blend in such anaWEsOMe way! So much love, insight, and magic come through.

The Love Medicine CD is masterfully produced, beautifully sung, and harmoniously seamed together, that I feel anyone – even if you’ve never bought a Native American CD before – will enjoy it. Exquisite, inspiring, and heart-opening! Put the CD on and listen to it all the way through.

Songs:

We Didn’t Ask Why is a modern contemporary piece that employs, guitar, drums, flute, Fabian speaking, Shelley singing, and just the perfect amount of rattle. Fabulous vibe! Musical wisdom you can dance to – whether you just want to sway, belly dance, or rock out! 🙂

The CD’s namesake track is: Your Love, My Medicine. Fantastic! Really exotic sounds, beautiful and rich guitar, flute, drums, and Shelley’s haunting voice. Backing vocals accentuate and balance. Blissful. Lyrics paint a gorgeous picture. Purple sunset, wild horses, ah.

She Talks To The Animals is another lyrically wonderful song because as we listen, we can envision it as a movie scene. Is there violin on this song? Tremendous! I embrace this melodious journey. Storytellers will be enchanted by it. Gentle and easy story to sway with.

Every time I listen to the short Interlude songs (there are two), I think of my beautiful granddaughter and her innocent voice. Sweet.

Surrender invites us along for a deep and thought provoking journey. It will stir compassion within your soul.

Peace and Love is upbeat and vibrant! It definitely brings home it’s message to me. If you want to get people moving, this is the song you need to use for your lead in. Motivational speakers, check it out! Charity leaders, you could use this too! This is an anthem and needs to get OUT to everyone – aWEsOMe message!

Love Came To Rescue Me takes me back to when my husband and I met. Love the violin on their song! It’s just brilliantly played. If you’ve ever been down, or hurt… then saved – this song will resonate with you. This song is profoundly personal to me.

One by One is a hopeful and transformative song. It encourages us to teach our children to reach for the stars – yes! “Ripples on the water”, and other universal insights of vibration and connection resound in this song, so you know I delight in it! Yes a perfect song for us idealists. The musical influences are mixed, so you can appreciate the Native American tones and enjoy this as you would any contemporary song on the radio. It’s a delicious song of positivity! Another great anthem type of song that will inspire you to be your best! One by one we can change the world.

If you live anywhere close to Ft. Walton Beach, Florida you can see Shelley and Fabian in person! Check the Musical Echoes Flute and Cultural event website to find out all about it!

When my husband and I attended the Brooksville Native American festival (Feb. 7th, 2015), we were honored to meet Shelley and Fabian. They are down-to-earth, lovely, and genuine. Their love and caring for each other was very apparent. Also, their kindness and compassion shined for everyone who came to meet them, shake their hand, whether or not the person bought a CD or beaded purse.

I developed a strong desire to meet Shelley after watching a video of Fabian and her (Click here to see the video –> on YouTube), which totally clicked when Shelley spoke the words that I was given years ago, We Are All Connected.

We Are All Connected

I am of Cherokee Native American descent. I continue to learn and uncover more about my Native American heritage along with that of my Welsh (English), Dutch, Irish, and German lineage. I lovingly stand on many shoulders.

When the words, We Are All Connected, came to me many years ago, I sensed the direction of my life would change. The more I explore our connections the more rich and full life becomes! 🙂

My husband is a guitarist and songwriter and wrote the song, (Click here to hear the song track #2 –> The Connection) also based on these words.

I have written a book chapter (Click here –> We Are All Connected book chapter) and blog post (Click here –> We Are All Connected to read my blog post) in exploration of all the ways that we are all connected. To me, it’s an undeniable reality.

You may not think you have any Native American ancestry, but I am learning that many of us do! It’s worth exploring that aspect, if it interests you.

When you visit Shelley’s website be sure to scroll down, especially if you click on the Store or Gallery links, as there is much to see! I plan to write a review of Shelley’s, “Full Circle” CD — soon!

Feeling so much better! Therapeutic massage with Tiffiny

I am honored and blessed to know Tiffiny C. Rudkin, LMT of Jade Tree Wellness Center Inc. I’ve had massages before, all wonderful, but Tiffiny has raised the bar for sure! In fact, she’s more than a massage therapist, she’s an”Ailment Alleviator.”

My experience with Tiffiny today (similar to my first visit) left me invigorated, breathing better, relaxed, ready to shop a bit, and then clean the house (when I got home later)!

I drank plenty of water afterwards too! It’s wise to drink plenty of water after receiving healthful bodywork in order to flush out any toxins and other unnecessary accumulations released from your muscles.

Tiffiny performs Myofascial Release, Neuromuscular Therapy, and Trigger Point Therapy–finding points on my back that I didn’t even know were sore until she found them! As well, she does Esalen Relaxation Massage, Cupping, and Tui Na.

Tiffiny used the cupping on me in a different way than I’d ever had done before also. She actually used a silicone cup to massage my back and release contracted muscles, which improves blood and lymphatic circulation. I also learned from Tiffiny that the way she uses the cup during massage prevents the temporary red circles from forming that I’ve known cupping can often leave on the skin.

Tiffiny knew she had a knack and passion for the healing arts, and thus became a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) in 2009. I asked how long she had been performing massage therapy, where she’d went to school, and how long it took. I have often considered going to massage school myself, but I am older than Tiffiny and my hands are not as strong as hers! Perhaps I should stick to typing! Haha!

As well as all of the therapies previously mentioned, Tiffiny also practices Craniosacral therapy, which is a light pressure modality used to achieve deep, cellular level relief and may also help with depression, anxiety, and PTSD.

Tiffiny works on Triathlon athletes using sports massage, pregnant women with pregnancy massage, and chair massage. With Craniosacral therapy, she can do mouthwork both inside and outside the mouth, which can be good for headaches, migraines, and TMJ dysfunction.

If you’ve had a massage, you know that you can feel how muscles seem to get “knots” or bumps in them. I actually had a couple of these in my back, on my shoulders, that I hadn’t realized, but Tiffiny’s focused therapeutic bodywork on these really helped to loosen them. She also worked on my neck quite a bit, which has had a kink or catch in it for several weeks. It’s totally released now and my singing rehearsal today went exceedingly well! I’m so stoked about realizing the wonderful benefits that massage can have on my breathing and vocal ability!

When I asked Tiffiny about massage later, she told me that she is an “Ailment Alleviator” and I believe her! And my belief is built from experience. Tiffiny’s client centered approach, and focus that’s specific to your body is outstanding! I think you’ll be amazed!

Feeling peace and calm while hanging out around bamboo

Walking in nature always gives me a sense of calm and ease, but depending upon what, or who’s around, the out of doors is not always such a peaceful place. So, I was so pleasantly surprised to find how much I enjoyed hanging out with my friend Terri yesterday at Island Bamboo!awesome bamboo.JPG

As soon as I arrived I was greeted and encouraged to explore the lush grounds. I was able to spend some quiet time soaking in the soothing beauty of different bamboo and other plants there, so enjoyable!Different types of bamboo.JPG

I really enjoyed seeing just how many varieties of bamboo they had. I think the large black bamboo was most impressive!

Beautiful black bamboo.JPG

Terri joined me a few minutes later and taught me quite a bit about the various bamboo they sell–I knew I loved bamboo, but didn’t know why until I had the time to really focus on it. This twisted kind was intriguing!

As I walked around, looking and sometimes touching the bamboo leaves (or them brushing up against my face or arm) I sensed incredible peace and gentle strength from just walking around the garden. It’s amazing that when you take time to slow down and breath in some nature, how relaxed you become.

I really enjoyed hanging out at the tiki hut too! Listening to the fountains was relaxing.

About bamboo

Bamboo is part of the grass family; a type of long living evergreen plant. Some of the largest kinds of bamboo are referred to as Giant bamboo. The insides of the stems are typically hollow and when Terri showed me one that had a cut stem, I was fascinated! It was so smooth and perfect!

The largest diameter bamboo stems can be cut lengthwise and made into beautiful wood flooring. You may have started seeing bamboo flooring recently in homes and businesses. When I’ve seen it, and asked about it, I’ve been told that it’s much more durable than wood flooring–for instance, if it gets flooded, it won’t buckle like other wood flooring.

For all do-it-yourselfers, eco-friendly, and earth caretaker folks, bamboo is sustainable (and “green”), meaning, it grows fast–some types grow a foot a day, with most growing 3 times faster than many trees! It can be used in construction, to make furniture, flooring, clothing, wind and percussion musical instruments, bows for sport and hunting, surfboards, bicycles, and more!

Bamboo doesn’t require much maintenance (unlike hedges and trees that must be pruned or groomed) though, if you’d like to train bamboo into a hedge, I learned that is pretty easy to do!

If you’re concerned about global climate change, bamboo exchanges more carbon dioxide from the air than trees!

Bamboo is strong and flexible. And it can withstand a lot of wind. If you want privacy, it’s definitely what you want! The bamboo comes in different heights and colors. I was amazed and bet you will be too! I’ve included some pictures also, so you can get some ideas:

Why Island Bamboo?

The owners and staff of Island Bamboo, in Pinellas Park Florida offer you plenty of time to explore a lush outdoor, 6 acre showroom of bamboo, plants, and products in a setting that feels off the beaten path, though still easy to get to from most of St Pete (St. Petersburg / Tampa Florida) and is alongside a main road–66th Street North. Their tranquil garden of bamboo and other live plants is quite extensive! And the feeling of calm I got while walking around was incredible.

You’ll learn so much about bamboo–I sure did (as I just explained). The owners and staff of Island Bamboo are super friendly and ready to help.

Island Bamboo also offers a ton of great information about bamboo on their website here about bamboo facts and here about bamboo species.

Island Bamboo offers landscaping services! If you’ve ever been attracted or drawn to bamboo, you owe it to yourself to visit Island Bamboo and learn about the many non-invasive clumping types of bamboo for your yard.

Island Bamboo sells bamboo in 3 to 25 gallon containers for planting. The clumping types of bamboo Island Bamboo specializes in, won’t take over your yard.

Before I left Terri showed me a fun little living mossy frog, and it was the perfect way to display a little bromeliad I had spied when I first started browsing, so I brought him home with me–and he joins another potted plant (aloe) that a friend recently gave me at Awakening Wellness Center. Life is good!Terri and mossy frog.JPG

Mossy frog is probably going to go to my office space with me next week, but for now, he’s enjoying the picnic table next to our RV home:

I know I’ll go back to Island Bamboo, as I spotted a couple items I’d love to get for gifts for family. My granddaughter would love one of these Circle of Friends.

A note about outdoor Florida weddings

If you, or someone you know, is planning a wedding soon, check out this page http://www.islandbamboogardens.com/photos.php#landscapes and look for the neat and beautiful wedding arch. I’m sure the fine folks at Island Bamboo can talk with you about how to acquire one of these for your upcoming ceremony. And since I am a Florida notary, you might also be interested in contacting me to perform your ceremony! (Just a little light-hearted self promotion here–haha!)

I truly hope you will visit Island Bamboo soon. Ask for Terri, and tell her I sent you!

Island Bamboo is open Monday through Friday 7am – 4pm and Saturdays until 1pm (but call first to make sure).

I’m still feeling the energy from our Breakthrough Performance Workshop Concert!

I did it! I sang on stage with a LIVE BAND! And they were a solid group of musicians and backup singers too! Believe it or not, I’m still feeling the energy from performing and from the audience!! Thank you again to all who joined us for that incredible night!

I just had the best rehearsal so far of our own original songs, The Connection and Wonderin‘ — I know it’s due to my having experienced Breakthrough!

The Breakthrough Performance Workshop, facilitated by Mick and Tess Pulver, allowed each willing participant to focus on sharing our authentic selves with each other, and with an audience. We touched aspects of self-exploration (in a mind body spirit way) while participating in their 8-week singing transformation program (find out more here: Breakthrough Performance Workshop).

Though I had sang years ago in church choir (and with a longtime friend as a duet), school choir, karaoke, and alongside my songwriter, guitarist/bassist husband at restaurants and home parties, I didn’t have the experience (until now) to sing on stage with a great live band! And it was an incredible life-enhancing experience!!

Mick and Tess were so supportive, Tess actually prepared me just before going on stage for my solo, by standing behind me, hands on my belly, and breathing WITH me! She was completely calming, enabled me to slow down, get present, and thoroughly enjoy singing my solo! There’s a clip of my solo on YouTube here: Breakthrough Performance 2016 Sheila M

This was abSOULutely a bucket list thing to do! And if you get the chance, DO IT!

I am continuing to experience many benefits from my concert experience, but here are a few:

  1. Being vulnerable on stage in front of a hundred+ people was so empowering! And I still feel the energy of it!
  2. My preconceived fears were NOT real. Remember, FEAR is just false evidence appearing real. You are NOT your fear!
  3. I totally felt integrated, breath, with mindful awareness, and ability to GIVE my authentic self to the audience.
  4. Singing brings me back to my breath, energizes yet soothes me (which I surmise will add more years to my life)!
  5. Has helped me feel even more comfortable when I speak with others at work.
  6. Add more joy and happiness to my day to day life!

Some of us will continue singing, with rehearsals continuing while Mick and Tess travel this summer (offering workshops in San Diego, California in the coming weeks).

I have learned so much through this program!

Building from what I learned from Dr. Michael Bernard Beckwith’s program, I had two specific memories during THIS Breakthrough Performance Workshop program:

  1. That an old memory of being shushed for singing too loudly one evening (after something bad had happened earlier in the day) is no reason not to squelch my voice any longer! I can clear that memory, or the negative charge from it at least, and SING loud, NOW!
  2. That just because I wasn’t selected for senior high choir (it had come down to me or another girl–and the other girl was chosen) did not mean that I wasn’t good enough. Yes! I AM good enough, was good enough, and will always be “good enough”. I am me, and I am unique. I CAN do this!

I also learned that even if I’m hurt or sad, singing lifts my mood and improves my attitude. The more you practice getting breath into and through the body, the less tense you are, and the more your authentic voice can express your thoughts and emotions.

I hurt my neck before the concert and was singing through the pain! I chose to move in and through the experience as fully as possible, knowing it was the culmination of eight weeks of joyful work, and that I may never get that exact experience again. I’m so glad I allowed that. I told myself, I’m not bleeding so the show must go on! Ha!

Special thanks to my wonderful chiropractor, Dr. Len Bauduin, who got me readjusted and feeling great! Dr. Len Bauduin of Madeira Beach Center for Natural Medicine

My personal list of Thanks go out to friends and family who came out to support me and this show:

Yes I had a cheering section (what a feeling to hear people call out your name as you come on stage!!! whew!)

My always loving and soul supportive husband, Richard Murrey – you are my rock babeez!!!
Amber DiPietra and her mom (and was the FIRST person to buy her ticket online for this event as soon as they were available online!! Yes!!)
Alison J Kay (so happy you could join us, AND that you GOT the reason why I wore the sacral and solar plexus colors for my song!!! My full on energetic “shifter”, Energy Medicine doctor, ahhh love!!! Yes!!)
Dearest sister Alania StarHawk, your presence–both you and Alison J Kay were the ones I had in mind and attention to while I was singing the line of my song for…”I’ve got to learn from the greats…” wow, so over the moon that you could BE there, AND that you brought another aWEsOMe pal Judith Ann Graham!!
Mary Ann Pickard I loved that you had so much fun and I’m so glad we had a few minutes to talk after!
Karen Peterson my soul sister and earth woman, green living, radical (that the world is naturally FULL of abundance) and powerful healer!

To the most supportive Sea Hut gang… ahhh you know we love YOU ALL: Debbie, Virginia, Amy Roger and Frank (thank you–to the four of you fantastic friends for taking Richard out pre-show for dinner while I was doing technical rehearsal with the band. You are all aWEsOMe!!!)

Patricia Leigh Allen and Edward Marriott (Thanks for aWEsOMe photos! You are a soul sweet guy! So “plugged in” to Source!)

…and new friends via the Breakthrough group: Carol Zerbarini and Maggie Bayliss our fabulous former Breakthrough Performance Workshop participants who came back to assist all of us!!!

Be on the lookout St. Pete (St. Petersburg, Florida), we’ll be singing somewhere live again real soon!
